Baker, Marcy
I am inspired by the rhythms of my neighborhood and by graceful relationships between natural and man-made structures.I carve relief blocks using traditional Celtic designs and Victorian-era motifs, and stamp into the paint in repeat patterns, an influence from my background in fabric design. This imagery is layered and juxtaposed with collage elements including line drawings and solar etchings of abstracted botanical and architectural forms. The process of arranging images – deciding what to reveal and what to conceal – is a way for me to integrate the disparate patterns, textures and colors that surround us in our daily lives. When engaged in my neighborhood I feel an intriguing play and comfort and anticipation. This balance is what I seek in my work.
