Conyne, Greg

I find the creative process either happens or doesn’t – and it seems to do so in its own time and its own way; a process of thinking where we are not just thinking on one plane only but on many planes simultaneously.  At this level certain connections may occur that were not anticipated but emerge as a gift; And it is not until I understand this and begin to finally laugh at myself for trying to will what essentially can never be willed, that I finally let go, toss all theories in the trash, and get out of the sculpture’s way so something special can be allowed to take place.

“I almost dislike anything that I do”, Wallace Stevens once said.  “that doesn’t fly in the window.” An in this moment, when the stuff is flying in the window like any unmerited grace, is when the sculpture, at last, is transformed into an extraordinary structure that offers intense but quiet reverie – that rises above its own abstraction and corporality and, like music, speaks to us directly from the soul’s fire.
