McCulloch, Sue-Del
One can make an argument that painting representational landscape in the 21st century is an anachronistic exercise; Having lost its function as a spiritual technology, a way of contemplating the Sublime, confirming the very existence of a Creator; comforting ourselves that the Source of such beauty is our Source. Now, with the reluctant understanding of the perpetual and increasing harm that we do, that we have altered the very earth and all its air, water and creatures, our contemplations are less comfortable.
Still, the lit-land, the cloud-riddled sky, the overstuffed-furniture-like clumps of trees, demand attention, rousing my intention to attention, rousing my intention to attempt once again some sort of painted affirmation of the world’s wordless, heart-breaking, knee-buckling beauty.
