Mead, Katherine
My work always seems to be rooted in my architectural background — the prism through which I seem to view the world.
Graphic blocks of color, collages and layers (and layers) of mostly found paper and materials. It is an honor to take once
humble materials used for instructional or mundane purposes and elevate them in a way that creates artistry, beauty and
emotion. Recycling in its highest form.
I work in contrasts — all beauty and interest in life evolves out of amazing and sometimes startling contrasts. The architectural
and the organic, the masculine and the feminine, ancient and modern, light and dark, smooth and rough, balance and chaos, the
visceral and the intellectual.
My painting is deeply personal. It is my diary and unspoken world. It is the visualization of thoughts, images, and ideas that
haunt me daily. It is my travel journal, my therapy, and thoroughly inevitable. Creativity is ephemeral — a journey with an
unknown destination. Time falls away and my inner world becomes the focus. It’s always surprising, often fulfilling, and if
I’m very lucky, magical.
