Alone, Yours to Keep

Carolyn Garcia and Lynn Whipple Show

November 3 – 28, 2009 | Artist’s Reception: Wednesday, November 4th, 5-7 pm

The Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is pleased to announce November’s show “Alone, Yours to Keep.” Featuring the works of artists Carolyn Garcia and Lynne Whipple, this show embraces the pleasures of nature and the senses through multiple mediums.

Carolyn Garcia is originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and moved to Portland, Oregon at the age of 17 to live with a boy she met through letters. A year later she began attending The Pacific Northwest College of Art and studied with a focus in painting and drawing. While attending she received the Nancy Tonkin Memorial Scholarship, the Voohries life drawing prize and the Caries drawing prize. Since graduating in 1988 she has shown her work in group shows throughout New Mexico, Texas and Oregon. Garcia has worked as a freelance illustrator and instructor of art and writing to children. She also has published the book “Moonboy” which she wrote and illustrated.

“I find the following eleven things very pleasurable,” Garcia stated, “train horns in the dead of night, the smell of dirt, being read to, the time of day when everything is bathed in gold, being tucked under a blanket and snug in my bed during a violent storm, sleeping next to a dog, rocks covered in rain and ocean water, the smell of horse, the song of the meadow lark, the haunted house at the Enchanted Forest and the sensation of pencil and paper.”

Lynne Whipple is a nationally known mixed media artist from Winter Park, Florida. Her process includes collage, found objects, painting, altered vintage photography, drawing and assemblage. Her subject matter ranges from things found in nature to vintage photo portraits, as well as odd bits of memorabilia. Her style is poetic but is infused with wry humor. Whipple’s work has been shown in galleries and museums across the country and she has been featured in numerous art books and magazines. She shares a studio with her artist husband John, 18 other artists, and one sweet cat.
