Passive Voice

Emily Stuart Show

September 1 – October 3, 2009 | Artist’s Reception: Wednesday, September 2nd, 5-7 pm

The Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is pleased to announce September’s featured show Passive Voice, a unique collection of multimedia assemblages by Emily Stuart. Through quiet yet saturated hues and a distinct arrangement of materials, Stuart has found a balance between rational order and the subconscious self. “Something magical comes together,” Stuart stated. Working with a strong three-dimensional focus and an architectural and minimalist influence, Stuart’s pieces represent a delicate play connecting space, shadow and structure.

Emily Stuart began this series of work by visiting various salvage stores, collecting potential items to employ. “I look for something that excites me,” she stated. Stuart was consistently drawn to objects with gears and moveable parts that she could take apart and transform. These items were then arranged with particular attention given to repetition and grid formations. “I find a way to divide space by using lines,” she noted. Although Stuart has an instinctive sense for creating order and placement in her work, she also allows subliminal suggestions to persuade the direction of her pieces, granting strengths from both intellectual constructs and spontaneous happenings.

Stuart’s artistic journey began taking shape when she was just three years old. She specifically remembers receiving her first box of crayons and instantly becoming inspired. Her artistic passion has carried on throughout her life and she majored in fine arts during college. This is where she became familiar with the works of Robert Rauschenberg and other multimedia artists of the 1960’s – 70’s. Rauschenberg’s randomness, wildness, color splashes and bold expressions struck a cord with Stuart and helped guide her into her own distinctive art practice.

Emily Stuart has reclaimed and transformed found objects into captivating and visually stimulating works. With an array of values and hues and of muted bright colors, she has brought into material form the visual concepts that emerge from her mind.
