Kim Murton and Alison O’Donoghue Show

January 6 – Jan 31, 2009 | Artist’s Reception: Wednesday, September 7th, 5-7 pm

Friends for many years, Alison and Kim have found intrigue in idea sharing. Each working in their own studios, sharing advice on raising families, these two accomplished artists found that their art has evolved but their ideas overlap.

Kim Murton’s ceramic sculptures blur the line between abstract and figurative. Color and pattern and the surface of the clay are all important aspects of her work. Most importantly, humor and wit are ever present. Murton is interested in repetition and the suble differences that can happen. Kim coils and pinches terra cotta clay, working from the bottom up and in profile. Her sculptures are painted with colored slip and are clear glazed.

Murton studied in Boston and New York City, first majoring in ceramics and then filmmaking. She spent her twenties living in NYC working in the animation industry. Moving to Boulder, CO led to an opportunity to teach clay classes, and rekindled an interest in making art out of clay.

Alison O’Donoghue has been a working artist for the past 20 years, is a native Oregonian and attended art school at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Her paintings are usually acrylic on wood, and are often populated with a myriad assortment of humans, animals, plants, household objects and combinations thereof. Inspired by the pulsating vibrancy of the world around her, and intrigued by the mysteries of the subconscious reality, O’Donoghue’s paintings are stories that uncover new truths, play with rhythm, and uncover the interconnectedness of all that surrounds us.

Alison recently was commissioned by the Salem Hospital to complete a 21′ painting for the new hospital coffee shop. The commissioned painting will be installed for the grand opening of the new Salem Hospital addition in 2009.
