Somewhere

Katherine Dunn and Laura Mack Show

June 2 – Jun 27, 2009 | Artist’s Reception: Wednesday, June 3rd, 5-7 pm

For the month of June the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is featuring unframed works on paper by Katherine Dunn and Laura Mack —two accomplished artists in a show titled “Somewhere”.

Katherine Dunn
“When I say the word, “Somewhere”, to myself, a mixture of longing and optimism comes over me. Perhaps Somewhere is a place I want to be real, but it isn’t real and never can be. Or maybe, Somewhere is where I would feel more like me than I often feel when I mingle in the real world. Somewhere, there is a safe place, and I can see and feel what it is I am meant to see and feel at that moment.”

Katherine lives on Apifera Farm in Yamhill where she is surrounded by her favorite muses – animals and nature. While her paintings travel internationally to get to their new owners, Katherine takes refuge on her farm, away from the chatter of the world’s chaos. Outside her studio she watches donkeys grazing amongst a flock of sheep, just up the hill from the lavender field.

She has been a nationally recognized illustrator since 1996 and her work has been commissioned by the likes of Target, Neiman Marcus, Hallmark, Gourmet, and Wall St. Journal. Her ever popular blog highlights the short stories she writes, often about the animals on her farm that come to life.

Her work has received awards from Communication Arts, Print, American Illustration and Society of Illustrators. She works in acrylic mixed with pencil, pastel and found papers and fabric.

Laura Mack
Laura Mack is an artist living in Salem and teaching full time at Chemeketa Community College. Her initial training in painting and drawing was completed in Florence, Italy, studying with Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky. Since that year, 1990-91, she has continued to attend workshops with these artists in Italy, south Africa, and San Francisco. Her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree was awarded by The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in conjunction with Tufts University in 1995. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Darmouth in 2004.

“I make collaged surfaces, layered with materials as well as meaning. My drawings and paintings hold pieces of imiagery which come together as elusive, raw, and intimate moments. Within the compositional spaces are people, animal, houses and text. What happens in the world around me-the stories I hear, the faces I see, and the history I revisit-it all gets deeply felt and reverberates in my work. This empathy and simultaneity is where my art springs from, and it is what drives my content.”
