Shine a Light – Artists Illuminate
Curated by William Skrips and Chris Giffin
March 6-31, 2012
Artist reception: March 7, 2012
We take the gift of light for granted, to the point where we Westerners think of it as a basic right. We actually complain about too much light. Astronomers find it intrusive and actively seek dark sites. Families move when the newest mall plans turn out to be within a mile of their personal digs.
Yet a certain magic comes from flicking on a room light or striking a match. Our mood can be set by the nature of lighting: candles burn with a yellow flame that we understand to be impure yet quite romantic. The buzz of the fluorescent can be hateful, but its product is kind to the eyes. Designers “paint” with light and Feng Shui practitioners charge by the hour to find “perfect” positions for lighting sources. Even the venerable flashlight still sets many a scene for the mystery or spooky story.
The Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is presenting the show, “Shine A Light”, where artists will show their personal visions of lamps and lighting devices. These artists represent a diverse take on the subject. Most use the ubiquitous baseboard electrical source as a start for their designs, but all similarities end there. You’ll have to come by the show to see what we mean.
Stop by the gallery and get a surprising, different take on the humble lighting fixture. We hope to pleasantly surprise and delight you with some very different thinking on the subject.
Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is a premier exhibition space in the Pacific Northwest committed to showing artists of exceptional quality and dedication. The gallery represents some of the most creative individuals from the local, regional and national communities.
